Starting from cryptophane-A as a building block, we design different xenon biosensors. Contrary to our nanoparticular approach, these sensor protoptypes are small molecular probes that do not aggregate. Their xenon NMR signal is very sensitive to the environment and can report different physico-chemical events. Such sensors change their resonance frequency, e.g., upon cellular internalization or upon interaction with a specific protein. x
Properties of the xenon host can be changed by attaching different functional units to implement binding to specific targets. We optimize the synthesis for reducing unwanted side products, explore mechanisms for switchable sensors, and characterize the biochemical behaviour of these conjugates.
